VINEYARD EVENTS 2002

IN December 2001, we were surprised to learn that an additional 3 acres (in RED) could be added to our exisiting vineyard through the purchase of an adjoining plot of land. Because the terrain is so hilly, we actually had to buy 14 acres to get 3 barely useable acres! As this was forest rather than exisiting farm land, I decided to show some of the stages in development of a new vineyard under poor weather and terrain conditions. Below is a topographic map of the area showing the exisiting and planned vineyard. The big feature is that the land slopes quite markedly to the west, offering great air draingae to facilitate frost prevention but increasing the risk of erosion. This year has been VERY dry, only one thunderstorm, and that a record, since the land was sub-soiled in March. Here is the story to date (July 15, 2002)
